Anglican leaders have barred a liberal US branch from decision-making for allowing same-sex marriage. \u2026The decision \u2013 made at a four-day meeting of 39 Anglican primates in Canterbury \u2013 means the Church will be suspended from participating in the life and work of the Anglican communion, the BBC\u2019s religious correspondent Carol Wyatt said.<\/p>\n \u2026A statement from the primates at the meeting says that the church should \u201cno longer represent us on ecumenical and interfaith bodies, should not be appointed or elected to an internal standing committee and that while participating in the internal bodies of the Anglican Communion, they will not take part in decision making on any issues pertaining to doctrine or polity\u201d.<\/p>\n The Church leaders added that the majority of those gathered at the meeting \u2013 which was described as \u201creally tough\u201d \u2013 would \u201creaffirm\u201d the teaching of scripture that \u201cupholds marriage as between a man and a woman\u201d
\nAnglicans have been divided on the issue since the US Episcopal Church ordained an openly gay bishop in 2003.
\nLeaders said the church\u2019s stance was a \u201cfundamental departure\u201d from the faith of the majority in what is the world\u2019s third largest Christian denomination.<\/p>\n
