He gave his disciples (and us) a \u201cnew commandment\u201d, to love one another in the same way that he loved them. The Gospel lesson according to the Revised Common Lectionary is John 13:1-17 and 31-35:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><audio controls src=\"http:\/\/theundergroundchurch.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Maundy-Thursday-Gospel.mp3\"><\/audio><figcaption>Gospel reading for Maundy Thursday, from Librivox<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Now before the feast of the Passover, Jesus, knowing that his time had come that he would depart from this world to the Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.\u00a0During supper, the devil having already put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon\u2019s son, to betray him,\u00a0Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he came from God, and was going to God,arose from supper, and laid aside his outer garments. He took a towel and wrapped a towel around his waist.\u00a0Then he poured water into the basin, and began to wash the disciples\u2019 feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him.\u00a0Then he came to Simon Peter. He said to him, \u201cLord, do you wash my feet?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Jesus answered him,\u00a0\u201cYou don\u2019t know what I am doing now, but you will understand later.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Peter said to him, \u201cYou will never wash my feet!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Jesus answered him,\u00a0\u201cIf I don\u2019t wash you, you have no part with me.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Simon Peter said to him, \u201cLord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Jesus said to him,\u00a0\u201cSomeone who has bathed only needs to have his feet washed, but is completely clean. You are clean, but not all of you.\u201d\u00a0For he knew him who would betray him, therefore he said,\u00a0\u201cYou are not all clean.\u201d\u00a0So when he had washed their feet, put his outer garment back on, and sat down again, he said to them,\u00a0\u201cDo you know what I have done to you?\u00a0You call me, \u2018Teacher\u2019 and \u2018Lord.\u2019 You say so correctly, for so I am.\u00a0If I then, the Lord and the Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another\u2019s feet.\u00a0For I have given you an example, that you should also do as I have done to you.\u00a0Most certainly I tell you, a servant is not greater than his lord, neither is one who is sent greater than he who sent him.\u00a0If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them<\/em>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2026<em>When he had gone out, Jesus said,\u00a0\u201cNow the Son of Man has been glorified, and God has been glorified in him.\u00a0If God has been glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself, and he will glorify him immediately.\u00a0Little children, I will be with you a little while longer. You will seek me, and as I said to the Jews, \u2018Where I am going, you can\u2019t come,\u2019 so now I tell you.\u00a0A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another.
