{"id":2564,"date":"2020-03-23T22:53:16","date_gmt":"2020-03-23T22:53:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/theundergroundchurch.net\/blog\/?p=2564"},"modified":"2020-03-23T22:54:08","modified_gmt":"2020-03-23T22:54:08","slug":"forsaking-the-assembling-together-but-finding-new-ways-to-connect","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/theundergroundchurch.net\/blog\/2020\/03\/23\/forsaking-the-assembling-together-but-finding-new-ways-to-connect\/","title":{"rendered":"Forsaking the Assembling Together &#8230; But Finding New Ways to Connect"},"content":{"rendered":"<body>\n<p>In the wake of the COVID-19 crisis, many churches have wrestled with measures to keep parishioners safe.\u00a0\u00a0That churches provide no immunity from the virus is well illustrated by the case of a Georgian churchgoer named Clay Bentley, who sang in a 100 member choir at his church on March 1 and soon afterward developed symptoms of coughing and fever.\u00a0\u00a0He was hospitalized with pneumonia and tested positive for the coronavirus.\u00a0\u00a0Bentley told the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/amp\/s\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-8105837\/amp\/Man-battling-coronavirus-says-barely-stand-getting-disease-singing-choir.html\">Daily Mail<\/a> that he\u2019s heard that seven other people who were also in the choir are now in hospitals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the case load of infected people in the U.S. rises, state governors are calling for restrictions on all public gatherings.\u00a0\u00a0Churches are heeding the call.\u00a0\u00a0Unprecedented photos of empty pews and barren meeting houses have floated through the ether.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most churches have canceled all services, and moved to online formats such as live-streaming, Zoom, and webcasts.\u00a0\u00a0Members have stayed in touch by connecting on Facebook, or by meeting only in small groups. Some churches have persisted in holding services, with modifications such as forgoing a communion cup.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Borrowing from restaurants, some churches have offered \u201cdrive through\u201d sacraments.\u00a0\u00a0One example is the St. Andrew Apostle School in Silver Spring, Maryland, as reported by <a href=\"https:\/\/catholicphilly.com\/2020\/03\/news\/national-news\/parishs-drive-in-offers-catholics-safe-way-to-adore-blessed-sacrament\/\">Catholic Philly<\/a>.  Father Leary is quoted: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cThere\u2019s a very beautiful paradox taking place. There\u2019s a contradiction in people\u2019s lives in the fact that they\u2019re starting to realize what they don\u2019t have. The absence is creating a longing for presence. What God is allowing is this divine encounter of love.  He\u2019s turning the hearts and eyes of the people back to Him.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Others are similarly optimistic.
