{"id":179,"date":"2015-03-28T16:31:10","date_gmt":"2015-03-28T16:31:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/theundergroundchurch.net\/blog\/?p=179"},"modified":"2015-03-28T16:35:16","modified_gmt":"2015-03-28T16:35:16","slug":"21-martyrs-of-egypt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/theundergroundchurch.net\/blog\/2015\/03\/28\/21-martyrs-of-egypt\/","title":{"rendered":"21 Martyrs of Egypt"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><body><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theundergroundchurch.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/isisdeaths.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-182 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theundergroundchurch.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/isisdeaths.jpg?resize=300%2C169\" alt=\"isisdeaths\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" loading=\"lazy\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theundergroundchurch.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/isisdeaths.jpg?resize=300%2C169 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theundergroundchurch.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/isisdeaths.jpg?w=650 650w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>In case you missed it, 21 mostly Coptic Christians from Egypt, who were working in Libya, were kidnapped, tortured, and killed by Islamic Extremists. \u00a0They were offered the chance to recant their faith but refused to do so. \u00a0They died praising the name of Jesus.<\/p>\n<p>Now they are being essentially canonized by the Coptic Church. \u00a0You can read about this in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.christiantoday.com\/article\/21.christians.slain.by.isis.to.be.declared.martyrs.by.coptic.church\/48657.htm\">Christianity Today<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em><span class=\"s1\">The deaths of 21 Christians to ISIS will not be in vain as they will be declared martyrs by the Coptic Orthodox Church, the equivalent of canonisation in the Catholic Church.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em><span class=\"s1\">In a <a href=\"http:\/\/en.radiovaticana.va\/news\/2015\/02\/21\/coptic_church_recognizes_martyrdom_of_21_coptic_christians_\/1124824\"><span class=\"s2\">statement<\/span><\/a>, Pope Tawadros II, the head of the Coptic Orthodox Church affirmed that the martyrdom of the 21 will be commemorated every 8<\/span><span class=\"s3\">th<\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0Amshir of the Coptic Calendar, the feast day of the Presentation of Jesus at the Temple.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em>\u2026Despite their impending <a href=\"http:\/\/madworldnews.com\/last-words-21-christians\/\"><span class=\"s2\">death<\/span><\/a>, the Christian men could be heard continuously chanting the words \u201cLord Jesus Christ\u201d, while some even screamed the name of Yeshua in their final moments.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em><span class=\"s1\">While the intention of ISIS was to sow fear among those who do not share their beliefs, the courage of the Christians has inspired many to further profess their faith.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em><span class=\"s1\">Beshir Kamel, whose brothers Bishoy and Samuel were among the martyrs slain by the group, said that his siblings\u2019 martyrdom serves as a \u201cbadge of honour to Christianity.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em><span class=\"s1\">\u201cISIS gave us more than we asked when they didn\u2019t edit out the part where they declared their faith and called upon Jesus Christ. Tertullian, a Christian apologist\u00a0from the third century, before he joined a non-Orthodox Christian sect, said, \u201cThe blood of martyrs is the seed of the Church.\u201d We believe that their martyrdom will help the Church grow stronger.
